The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and key stakeholders in the tertiary education sector have officially pegged the national minimum benchmark for university admissions at 150 for the 2026/2027 academic session. This decision was solidified during the 2026 annual policy meeting held in Abuja, chaired by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa.
Under these new guidelines, institutions are permitted to set their individual cut-off marks higher than the national minimum depending on the competitiveness of their courses. While universities have a 150-point benchmark, polytechnics have been set at 100, and colleges of nursing remain at 150. JAMB Registrar emphasized that this policy is designed to streamline the admission process while maintaining academic standards across the board. Candidates who scored above these thresholds are eligible to proceed with their post-UTME screenings, though they must ensure their O'level results are uploaded to the CAPS portal. The board has further warned institutions against admitting students who fall below these benchmarks, noting that such admissions would be deemed null and void.
