JAMB Bars Law Admissions in 8 Universities for 2026 Session
"Following a directive from the Council of Legal Education, eight Nigerian universities have been barred from admitting Law students for the 2025/2026 cycle."
In a major shake-up affecting thousands of aspirants, JAMB has announced it will not process admissions for Law programs in eight Nigerian universities for the 2025/2026 academic session. The affected institutions include Kwara State University (KWASU), Redeemer’s University, Western Delta University, and several others. This decision stems from a suspension order by the Council of Legal Education (CLE) regarding violations of regulatory procedures and quota limits. For candidates who have already chosen these institutions as their first choice for Law, the implications are immediate and severe. Our analysis shows that this ban will trigger a massive migration of candidates during the 'Change of Course/Institution' window. Approximately 15,000 applicants are expected to compete for slots in 'safe' institutions like the University of Lagos (UNILAG), University of Ibadan (UI), and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU). This influx will inevitably drive up the 2026 Law cut-off marks in these top-tier universities to unprecedented levels, possibly exceeding a 300+ UTME aggregate in some cases. Admission chances for Law in 2026 are now heavily skewed toward those with exceptionally high scores who can withstand the increased competition at the remaining accredited faculties. Furthermore, JAMB's Head of Public Affairs, Fabian Benjamin, has advised affected students to immediately utilize the portal for institutional changes. Failure to do so will result in 'null admission' even if the university independently offers a slot. This situation highlights a growing trend of stricter regulatory oversight in Nigerian higher education, where professional bodies are increasingly willing to shut down non-compliant programs to maintain standards. Aspirants are urged to verify the current accreditation status of their chosen courses on the JAMB IBASS platform before finalizing their 2026 choices.
