NELFUND Student Loan Expansion Shifts Admission Preferences for 2026 Cycle
"The successful disbursement of over 150 billion Naira in student loans is causing a massive surge in applications for high-fee federal universities."
The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has reached a critical milestone in February 2026, with over one million successful loan applications processed since its inception. In the last month alone, over 1.33 billion Naira was disbursed to the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and significant sums to UNIBEN and OAU to cover the institutional charges of over 15,000 students. This financial cushion is radically altering the 2026 admission landscape. Previously, many high-performing candidates from low-income backgrounds avoided prestigious federal universities with high ancillary fees, opting instead for less competitive state institutions or colleges of education. With the zero-interest loan scheme now fully operational and integrated with JAMB's admission portal, there is a visible 'prestige shift.' Admission data for the current cycle shows a 25 percent increase in first-choice applications for federal universities that are fully integrated with NELFUND. This surge in interest has a direct impact on admission chances: cut-off marks for competitive courses at these 'loan-ready' institutions are projected to skyrocket. For instance, the University of Lagos, which recently confirmed receipt of massive NELFUND payments, is seeing a record number of candidates choosing it as their first choice, making the competition for its merit-list slots fiercer than ever. Conversely, institutions that have been slow to verify their students for the loan scheme are seeing a slight dip in interest. This creates a two-fold challenge for the 2026 candidate: they must not only score high enough to beat the rising cut-offs driven by the 'loan effect' but also ensure that their chosen institution is actively participating in the NELFUND program to guarantee their own financial security. Investigative analysis suggests that while the loans increase access, they are also consolidating the concentration of top talent in a few 'elite' federal schools, potentially widening the gap in admission difficulty between federal and state-owned tertiary institutions.
