NELFUND Extends 2025/2026 Student Loan Application Deadline to February 27
"The Nigerian Education Loan Fund has extended the application deadline for the current cycle to February 27, 2026, ensuring more students can access tuition support."
In a significant move to bolster tertiary education accessibility, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) announced an extension of the 2025/2026 academic session loan application deadline from January 31 to February 27, 2026. This extension comes at a critical time when many federal and state universities are finalizing their admission lists. The Managing Director of NELFUND, Akintunde Sawyerr, emphasized that this 30-day window is designed to be inclusive, allowing students from low-income backgrounds who recently secured admission to complete their financial documentation. This policy shift has a direct and profound impact on admission chances for thousands of candidates. In previous years, many qualified students were forced to forfeit their admission because they could not meet the immediate 'acceptance fee' and 'tuition' deadlines set by institutions like the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) or the University of Ibadan (UI). With NELFUND’s expanded window, the financial barrier to entry is lowered, meaning more candidates will likely accept their offers rather than letting them lapse. However, this also increases the overall 'active' student population, which could lead to tighter competition for campus resources such as hostel accommodation. From an investigative standpoint, the extension suggests that the fund is aiming to hit a specific disbursement target of over N200 billion for this cycle. For prospective students, this means that those who previously thought university was unaffordable should now reconsider their options. The fund covers 100% of institutional fees and provides a monthly upkeep allowance, which significantly reduces the dropout rate of freshers. Admission seekers are advised to use this February window to synchronize their JAMB admission letters with their NELFUND profiles, as the fund requires proof of admission before final approval. Failure to utilize this extension could result in financial exclusion, especially as universities are now adopting 'pay-before-matriculation' policies to manage their burgeoning operational costs.
