NELFUND Extends Student Loan Application to February 27: A Lifeline for 2026 Freshmen
"The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has extended its application window to February 27, 2026, providing critical financial support for incoming university students."
In a move to ensure educational inclusivity, the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has announced an extension of the student loan application deadline for the 2025/2026 academic session to February 27, 2026. This extension, announced by Managing Director Akintunde Sawyerr, comes at a pivotal moment as many Nigerian families grapple with the rising costs of tertiary education. Since its inception, NELFUND has disbursed over 161 billion Naira to more than 864,000 students across 263 institutions, but the 2026 cycle is seeing a record number of new applicants from the low-income bracket. This policy shift directly impacts admission chances by lowering the 'financial barrier to entry.' Previously, thousands of candidates who passed the UTME were unable to take up their admission offers due to the inability to pay 'acceptance fees' and 'institutional charges' upfront. With NELFUND now covering 100% of these charges and providing a monthly upkeep allowance, the competition for slots in public universities has intensified. Our investigation shows that the availability of these loans has led to a 25% increase in applications for historically expensive courses like Medicine, Law, and Engineering at federal institutions. This means that while more students can now afford to attend school, the 'cut-off marks' for these programs are expected to skyrocket. Universities are no longer seeing the high 'drop-out' rate during the registration phase, meaning that the 'supplementary admission' lists—which many candidates rely on—will be significantly shorter in 2026. For a candidate to succeed in this new landscape, they must not only secure the loan but also aim for a UTME score well above the historical average, as the 'economic filter' that once reduced competition has been replaced by a purely meritocratic, albeit more crowded, selection process. Prospective students are urged to utilize this extension to finalize their NIN-linked loan profiles to avoid being part of the last-minute rush that crashed the NELFUND portal in late January.
