Nigerian Universities Miss Top 10 in 2026 Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings
"No Nigerian university was featured among the top 10 in the inaugural QS World University Rankings for Sub-Saharan Africa 2026, though four made the top 20."
In the recently released QS World University Rankings: Sub-Saharan Africa 2026, Nigerian institutions failed to secure a spot in the top 10. The University of Ibadan (UI) led the Nigerian pack at 11th place, followed by the University of Lagos (UNILAG) at 15th, University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) at 19th, and Covenant University at 20th. The rankings, which assessed 69 institutions across 21 countries, were dominated by South African universities. The report highlighted challenges such as chronic underfunding and frequent strikes as factors affecting the performance of Nigerian universities.
