NUC Grants Approval for 29 Universities to Launch Online Degrees for 2026 Academic Session
"In a major shift toward digital education, the National Universities Commission (NUC) has approved online degree programs for top institutions including UI, UNILAG, and OAU, altering the 2026 admission quota."
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially authorized 29 Nigerian universities to offer full-scale online Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees starting in 2026. This list includes prestigious institutions such as the University of Ibadan (UI), Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), and the University of Lagos (UNILAG). This development, part of the 2026 Digital Education Strategy, aims to bridge the gap between the massive number of applicants and the limited physical capacity of Nigerian campuses. For the 2026 admission cycle, this means a significant expansion of available 'slots,' albeit in a virtual format.
Our investigation into the NUC guidelines reveals that these online degrees will carry the same academic weight and NYSC eligibility as their physical counterparts. This is a game-changer for candidates who typically lose out on admission due to the 'catchment area' policy or physical space constraints in competitive faculties. By offering an online alternative, universities can now admit thousands of students who meet the academic requirements but fall outside the physical capacity limits. This theoretically increases a candidate’s chances of securing a degree from a top-tier institution by up to 40%.
However, the move to digital comes with its own set of challenges. The NUC has mandated that all 2026 online degree candidates must pass a 'Digital Proficiency Assessment' alongside their standard UTME scores. This adds an extra layer of screening that may disadvantage students from educationally less developed states who lack consistent access to technology. Additionally, while the admission chance is higher for online programs, the investigative consensus is that employers may still harbor biases toward physical degrees in the short term. For the 2026 candidate, the choice is now between a highly competitive battle for a physical seat or a more accessible, albeit technologically demanding, path through the newly approved online portals.
