NUC Grants Full Accreditation to Online Degree Programs at 12 Federal Universities

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has officially released an updated list of accredited distance learning and online degree programs for 2026, marking a significant expansion in access to higher education in Nigeria. This move comes as a response to the massive gap between the 1.9 million UTME applicants and the limited 600,000 physical seats available in traditional classrooms. Federal universities, including the University of Abuja, University of Maiduguri, and Obafemi Awolowo University, have received the green light to offer various Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees through remote learning platforms. This development radically improves the admission chances for candidates who may not meet the extremely high merit cut-off marks for physical residency but still possess strong academic credentials. For instance, while a candidate might need a score of 280 to study Computer Science at a physical campus, the online equivalent may accept scores as low as 180-200, provided the O'level requirements are met. The NUC's 'BSc from Home' initiative ensures that online degrees carry the same legal weight and employment value as physical degrees, as they follow the same Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS). Our investigation into the 2026 framework shows that these online programs will utilize a hybrid assessment model, where lectures are delivered via sophisticated Learning Management Systems (LMS) while semester examinations are conducted at proctored centers nationwide. This model effectively bypasses the 'carrying capacity' constraints that usually force universities to reject qualified students. For the 2026 admission cycle, candidates are advised to check the 'Distance Learning' option on their JAMB CAPS. This is especially relevant for working-class applicants or those in geographically remote areas. By diversifying the mode of delivery, the NUC expects to absorb an additional 200,000 students into the university system this year, significantly reducing the 'JAMB-repeaters' syndrome that has plagued the country for decades.
