NUC to Launch 'e-NUC' Digital Portal: Automating University Accreditation and Admission Monitoring in 2026
"The National Universities Commission introduces the e-NUC system to digitize accreditation workflows and stabilize admission quotas."
The National Universities Commission (NUC) has announced the full-scale rollout of the 'e-NUC' digitization project in February 2026, a transformative initiative aimed at modernizing the oversight of the Nigerian University System (NUS). Spearheaded by the Executive Secretary, Professor Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu, the e-NUC system is a web-based architecture designed to automate the entire workflow of the commission, from institutional accreditation to real-time monitoring of admission quotas. This investigative report explores how this digital shift will fundamentally change the landscape for 2026/2027 applicants. Traditionally, accreditation visits were periodic and paper-heavy, sometimes resulting in students being admitted into programs that had lost their professional standing without the public's knowledge. With e-NUC, accreditation status will be updated in real-time and integrated directly into the JAMB CAPS portal. This means that a candidate will be unable to even select a course that does not have current NUC approval, providing a vital layer of protection against fraudulent or sub-standard educational offerings. Furthermore, the system is designed to match university graduate output with national manpower needs more accurately. By using data-driven decision-making, the NUC can now adjust the 'carrying capacity' of universities based on their actual infrastructure—such as the number of functional laboratories and classrooms—rather than theoretical estimates. For prospective students, this might mean a slight reduction in admission quotas for science and engineering courses in institutions that haven't upgraded their facilities, but it guarantees that those who are admitted will receive a quality education. The e-NUC portal also features a 'Transparency Dashboard' for parents and students to check the ranking and accreditation history of any department in Nigeria. This shift toward a paperless, automated system reduces the potential for administrative corruption and ensures that the 'merit' in 'merit-based admission' is verifiable. As Nigerian universities strive for global competitiveness, the e-NUC platform serves as the backbone for the 2026 'Renewed Hope' agenda in education, aiming to stabilize the calendar and enhance the global ranking of Nigerian degrees.
