NUC Approves Online Degree Programs and AI Courses for 2026/2027 Academic Session

The National Universities Commission (NUC) has launched a transformative phase for the Nigerian University System (NUS) by approving 13 new degree programs and a nationwide expansion of Online Distance Learning (ODL) for the 2026/2027 session. The newly accredited courses include high-demand fields such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, Intelligence and Security Studies, and Nuclear Engineering. This move aligns with the Core Curriculum and Minimum Academic Standards (CCMAS), which empowers universities to innovate 30 percent of their syllabus to meet contemporary global job market needs. In a parallel development, the NUC has granted several federal and private universities the license to offer full Bachelor of Science (BSc) degrees remotely. This 'BSc from Home' initiative is a direct response to the massive gap between the number of qualified applicants and the physical carrying capacity of Nigerian campuses. For the 2026 admission cycle, this expansion is a game-changer. It effectively increases the available admission slots by over 200,000 across the country, providing a viable alternative for candidates who score well in the UTME but are traditionally displaced by the competitive residential quotas. Candidates interested in these new tech programs will face intense competition, but the NUC's new 'e-NUC' platform ensures that the accreditation status and admission process are more transparent than ever. This digital shift also means that verification of certificates for these online degrees will be instantaneous, addressing long-standing concerns about the validity of distance learning. Prospective students are advised to carefully check the NUC accreditation portal before finalizing their course choices, as only institutions that have passed the 2026 'Resource Assessment Visit' are authorized to admit students into these new disciplines.
