Federal High Court Restrains UNILAG and OAU from Finalizing 2025/2026 Admission Lists
"A lingering court injunction has stalled the conclusion of the previous admission cycle at two top-tier universities, creating a backlog that threatens the 2026 calendar."
A Federal High Court sitting in Enugu has extended an interim injunction restraining the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) from releasing or validating their 2025/2026 admission lists. The suit, filed by a group of aggrieved candidates, challenges the transparency of the Post-UTME screening processes and the calculation of aggregate scores. While OAU has reportedly proceeded with some internal admission processes, the legal stalemate has created a significant 'admission logjam.' Our investigative analysis suggests that if this legal battle persists into the second quarter of 2026, it will have a catastrophic 'domino effect' on the current 2026 UTME candidates. Specifically, if the 2025/2026 batch is not fully admitted and matriculated by the time the 2026 exam results are released in April, these universities may be forced to merge two sets of candidates into a single academic year. For 2026 aspirants, this means that the available 'carrying capacity' or admission quota will be drastically reduced. Instead of the usual 8,000 to 10,000 slots per university, institutions might only have space for half that number to avoid overwhelming their already strained infrastructure—especially given recent reports of multi-million naira electricity debts at UNILAG. This potential reduction in quota means that only 'top-tier' scorers (likely those with UTME scores above 280) will stand a realistic chance in competitive departments like Medicine, Law, and Engineering. Candidates currently registering for the 2026 UTME should consider these universities as 'high-risk' and may need to ensure their second-choice institutions are viable backups. The outcome of the next court hearing on February 28 will be a decisive moment for thousands of students currently in limbo.
