The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) have jointly announced a shift in their screening protocols for the 2026/2027 academic session. Moving away from traditional CBT methods, these institutions are introducing AI-integrated proctoring systems for their Post-UTME exercises. This change follows an investigative audit that revealed a slight increase in 'proxy' test-taking during the 2025 cycle. The new system utilizes facial recognition and behavioral analytics to ensure the person taking the test is the registered candidate. From an admission standpoint, this is a game-changer. It effectively eliminates the 'booster' scores that previously inflated departmental cut-off marks. Analysis indicates that while the raw scores might appear lower this year, the integrity of the selection process will be at an all-time high. This directly benefits high-performing, honest students who previously lost spots to candidates with artificially inflated results. However, there is a looming concern regarding digital equity. Students from schools without modern ICT facilities might find the AI-driven interface intimidating, potentially affecting their performance. The investigative team discovered that UNILAG plans to offer 'pre-test' simulation sessions in late February to familiarize candidates with the interface. Admission chances for the 2026 cycle will now rely heavily on a candidate's ability to maintain composure under high-tech surveillance. Experts predict that the 'weighted score'—a combination of UTME, O'Level, and Post-UTME—will see a shift where the Post-UTME holds more significant weight than in previous years. Candidates aiming for competitive courses like Medicine, Nursing, and Engineering are advised to prioritize speed and accuracy, as the new AI system also tracks time-per-question as a metric for cognitive readiness. This move marks the beginning of a new era in Nigerian university admissions where technology acts as the ultimate gatekeeper of merit.
