UNILAG and UI Policy Shift: Virtual Learning and Strict Re-Registration Rules for 2026

As the 2025/2026 academic session reaches its peak in February 2026, Nigeria’s premier universities, the University of Ibadan (UI) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG), have introduced critical operational shifts that directly influence 2026 UTME candidates. UI has successfully integrated a 6-week virtual lecture model for its freshers, a trend that is expected to continue for the 2026 intake. This hybrid model allows the university to admit a larger volume of students than its physical infrastructure would traditionally support, potentially increasing the admission quota for the 2026/2027 session by up to 15%. However, this comes with a warning: students must be tech-savvy and have reliable internet access to survive the first semester. Simultaneously, UNILAG has issued a stern directive regarding matriculated students who attempt to register for the 2026 UTME to 'change' courses or institutions. The university management, in collaboration with JAMB, has implemented a biometrics-linked system that identifies already-registered undergraduates. Failure to officially withdraw and disclose prior admission status will result in the forfeiture of both the old and the new admission. This move is designed to stop 'quota-hogging,' where students hold places in two departments while they decide which one to keep, thereby denying thousands of applicants a fair chance. For new applicants, this policy is a major boost, as it ensures that every slot on the admission list is filled by a genuine new student. The 'catchment area' and 'merit' cut-off marks for 2026 are expected to be more accurately reflective of the true applicant pool. Furthermore, both institutions are moving toward a more decentralized, faculty-based screening process. Candidates aiming for the 2026 cycle should note that 'Subject Synergy'—the alignment of O-Level results with specific UTME combinations—will be more strictly scrutinized this year to reduce the high rate of admission disqualification during the physical clearance stage.
