UNILAG and UI Announce Joint Digital Competency Test for 2026 Post-UTME
"The University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Ibadan (UI) have introduced a mandatory Digital Literacy segment to their 2026 Post-UTME screening."
In a pioneering collaboration, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) and the University of Ibadan (UI) have announced a radical shift in their 2026 Post-UTME screening format. Starting this February, all candidates who chose these institutions as their first choice must now undergo a 'Digital Literacy and Logic' (DLL) assessment as 30% of their total screening score. This replaces the traditional subject-heavy model which previously relied solely on repeating UTME-style questions. The investigative reason behind this change is the high rate of academic struggle among first-year students in digital research and computational thinking. This new requirement significantly alters the admission chances for the 2026 cohort. Students from urban private schools with high exposure to ICT will likely find this transition seamless, but it creates a substantial hurdle for students from rural backgrounds or underfunded public schools. Our analysis indicates that this could lead to a 'digital divide' in the admission list, where tech-savvy candidates edge out those with higher JAMB scores but lower digital proficiency. For the 2026 session, UNILAG has also confirmed that it will no longer use the 'Aggregate Score' system in the way it did in 2025. Instead, they are moving toward a 'Holistic Review' which considers the O-Level results, the UTME score, and the new DLL assessment. This move is designed to identify well-rounded candidates. For UI, the introduction of logic and critical thinking questions aims to filter for students who can thrive under the university’s rigorous independent study model. This means that a candidate with a JAMB score of 320 might still lose their spot to someone with 290 if the latter performs exceptionally well in the digital competency segment. The weight of this new test cannot be overstated; it is essentially a 'gatekeeper' module. Aspirants are advised to seek out CBT practice software that specifically includes logic and basic computing modules. This change marks the beginning of a trend where Nigerian universities are looking beyond rote memorization toward skill-based admission criteria. Those who fail to adapt to this digital-first approach will find the doors of Nigeria’s premier institutions increasingly difficult to unlock in 2026.
