Federal Government Enforces 16-Year Age Limit for 2026 Admissions with New 'Exceptional Ability' Clause

The Federal Ministry of Education and JAMB have confirmed the continuation of the 16-year minimum age requirement for admission into Nigerian tertiary institutions for the 2026/2027 academic session. Specifically, candidates must be at least 16 years old by September 30, 2026, to be eligible for most undergraduate programs. This policy, which was a point of intense debate in previous years, aims to ensure that students are emotionally and psychologically mature enough for the rigors of university life. However, a significant update for the 2026 cycle is the formal introduction of the 'Exceptional Candidate Assessment.' This clause allows candidates who are younger than 16 to be considered for admission if they demonstrate extraordinary academic prowess. To qualify under this exemption, an underage candidate must score at least 320 (representing 80 percent) in the 2026 UTME and maintain a similar high performance in their Post-UTME or Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) results. This nuanced approach addresses the concerns of gifted students while maintaining the general age standard. For the majority of applicants, this policy means that admission lists will prioritize those who meet the age criteria, potentially reducing the overall competitive pool in certain high-demand courses like Engineering and Law, where younger 'prodigies' often apply in large numbers. School administrators have noted that this enforcement is helping secondary schools return to a standard six-year curriculum, discouraging the practice of 'skipping' classes. Candidates who do not meet the age requirement and do not qualify for the 'exceptional' status are encouraged to consider interim programs such as A-levels (IJMB or JUPEB) or vocational certifications, which can be used for Direct Entry (DE) once they reach the required age. The 2026 guidelines also state that the UTME results of underage candidates who fail to meet the 80 percent threshold will be withheld until they complete a mandatory evaluation process or reach the required age in a subsequent session.
